Friends of Wentzville Parks Receive Award

Printer-friendly version

The “Friends of Wentzville Parks” were presented with a Citation by the Missouri Park and Recreation Association at their annual conference at the Lodge of Four Seasons.  This award was in recognition of their outstanding efforts in seeing that Wentzville has a “world-class” parks and recreation department.

In 2008, a group of citizens recognized that the explosive growth in Wentzville was outpacing its parks and recreation amenities.  They became organized, incorporating as a 501(c)(3) in January of 2009, and set out to gather volunteers and resources to support their mission.

In nominating the FOWP for this award, Recreation Supervisor Dottie Phillips described them as people who “look at a need and say, ‘someone should do something,’ and then they are some of the few who follow up by actually doing something!”

Since its incorporation, the Friends have donated over $10,000 to unfunded parks projects, raised awareness of local needs, and most recently were instrumental in the passage of the ½ cent sales tax to help develop three new parks.  In addition, this ambitious group has extended their reach beyond Wentzville, contributing funds to aid in the reconstruction of Joplin parks following the 2011 tornado.

Guided by their founder and president, Greg Younger, FOWP has proven to be a major asset to Wentzville Parks and Recreation.
