The local VFW Veterans Presented Misty

With A Generous Contribution

Thank You For Your Support!

The federal government and Veterans Administration may have turned their back on a young mother and three children left to survive another PTSD suicide alone, but the local community did not!  It is estimated that over 200 patriotic citizens made a point to attend a benefit for the family of Marine SSGT Michael Blum on Saturday, October 12, 2013 at Babylons in Cottleville, Missouri. Once again, the strength of our local Veterans came out in full force, when the local VFW's presented Misty with $5,000 at the benefit event. The entire benefit effort raised approximately $25,000.

This isn't the first time many in the group had gathered to honor the family. On Thursday, September 26, 2013, friends and family also gathered to say good-bye to Marine SSGT Michael Blum  at Jefferson Barracks Cemetery. Michael died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound on Sunday, September 15, 2013, while at home with his wife and three children.

SSGT Michael Blum was a Marine for 20 years. He served 4 tours in Iraq for our country before returning home and settling in Wentzville, Missouri. Michael returned home with a life-altering dose of Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome.  The resulting negative effects of Michael's Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome permanently impaired the lives of his surviving wife and children. Michael's wife, Misty will remember forever the fear of living with the disorder on a daily basis. Michael's children will grow up without their father.

However, now they face their new life with a funeral paid in full and a little more financial stability to help them adjust to the struggle. And, through the planning of the special benefit, friendships were rekindled and true empathy was shared with a family who was commited to protecting our country - and in return, our government failed in response.

SSGT Blum's struggle with PTSD did not go unnoticed. Misty Blum, Michael's wife wrote of family's fear and despair prior to Michael's suicide in a blog located at .

(Please take the time to read this incredible blogspot.)

The United States Marines denied payment for funeral expenses incurred from Michael's death. Misty was informed that she does not qualify for survivor benefits. Clearly, this family needed help and the aftermath of the loss of a loving husband and father has left them devastated.

After word of this tragedy (and injustice) spread through the St. Charles County Community, Kelly Wampler Steffen, with the assistance of Kristie Ketcherside, Lisa Hollingsworth, Kelly Sitze-Miller and numerous  friends from Misty's high school years pooled their resources together and went to work to help their friends. Both Michael and Misty is are graduates Fort Zumwalt North High School. Though military life has kept the Blum family from living in the area of late, her friends have never forgot her and continue to step forward to assist the efforts.

Donations can still be made. If you would like to contribute,  please contact   Kelly Wampler Stefen at .  )
